Goodfellows lost a beer sale because of an uninterested bar person. The meat in the Patty melt lacked flavor. Good luck with your choice.

Simply put, the food here is average. Reminded me of a dinner at a chili's. The warm rolls seemed to be prepackaged buns that were warmed before being served. My wife's sausage tortellini was ok - very creamy and cheesy, not enough sausage. My queen cut prime rib was much thinner than expected with an interesting glaze on it. The cut was very fatty which is alright on larger cuts, but this one too much fat for the size of the steak. Ambiance is good with the goodfellows character right outside. I probably would have enjoyed it more here eating from the bar watching the big screens.

Matt and I are realizing the restaurants here are not up to par to what we're used to, coming from in Houston, where we have the best restaurants in the nation. In spite of this, I think we did hit up the best restaurants each city had to offer. After a full day of riding bicycles around the island, doing some site seeing and a little shopping, we settled into Goodfellas, which was recommended by Yelp and some city folks. Our bartender was not able to get to us on food order for at least 30 minutes, but he did take our drinks orders early on. We ordered the Filet Mignon, house salad and a couple of glasses of wine. The place was busy! For where we were and what we were ordering, our steak was actually pretty good. It was a little undercooked, but it was still good and we liked it. We would have liked a little more veggies than what was provided, but it was fine. The au gratin was pretty good too, had good flavors. We were pleased with our food. We decided to sit at the bar to bypass the wait. Turns out we happen to be sitting at next to Ira Green and Melanie Libbey of Goodfellas, 21 Speed, Saunders, etc., who have about $25M in investments on Mackinac Island. That was pretty neat! They were very friendly and super nice.

First place to hit when we got to the island. First off, the service blew. We think our waiter was high. Got a tomato and mozzarella salad, not bad at all. Prime Rib was ordered rare, came Medium Well and was as tough as a leather shoe. Seriously probably the worst Prime I ever had. They were good about taking it back, and I just got an order of Calamari instead, which oddly enough was pretty good.

we had our resent wedding reception dinner at Goodfellow's. We were very happy and would recommend to anyone.

On the mainland this is a 2-3 star establishment. On the island - especially with the awesome view from the porch tables of the main drag in downtown - it's 4 stars. You didn't come to Mackinac Island for the food so don't bitch and whine when the food isn't world class. You're eating ok food while sitting on the porch watching horses, horse carriages, people, and people on bikes go by. That's pretty cool. As for the food... The fish (perch) and chips was fine. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat it again, but I would eat here again for the view.

Acceptable but pricey. Billing itself as a chop house is a stretch as the cuts of meat were ordinary and the menu was limited. Limited menu is a downer and if you're looking for a great steak this isn't your place. That being written however, for a tourist area this is as good as any. Let me update this - My wife was happy with her meal and our kids were happy as well. The menu selection was good and varied enough in their opinion.

This was one of the better restaurants on the island that we ate at. I had the sauteed perch with green beans and mashed potatoes. The perch was just amazing! It melted in the mouth, it seemed like it was really fresh since it tasted so good. A little pricey at $25 but you get 6-7 pieces of perch and it was really well executed. They were extremely busy (after 8 PM on a Saturday night) but they worked hard and gave good service despite how busy they were. Bonus points for having the fastest and most reliable wifi I have encountered so far on Mackinac. I will definitely come back here next time I come to the island.

Great drinks, nice environment. The food seems great. Not a lot of draft selections but very creative bartenders.

Solid Italian food! The service was slower than I wanted it to be. The wild mushroom flatbread was delicious, as was the mushroom gnocchi and the sausage tortellini. Pretty solid choice for dinner on the island, and easy to make reservations.

The wife and I came here (the Goodfellow's grill location, not the chop house) for some food and beer after an evening exploring the shops downtown. We sat at the bartender did a good job checking on us and getting our drink and food orders. Service overall was fine - nothing amazing, but attentive and helpful. The pizza we ordered was good and about what I expected from a bar. The prices seemed a little high for just the pizza and few beers that we ordered, but I can't say that much on Mackinac Island is bargain priced. It's a touristy town so that's what you get. It was a very average experience overall. Everything was fine, but nothing was special. Prices were a little high, but that was to be expected. Would I come back? Yes, but I wouldn't make a point of it.

Did they lose their liquor license? Not sure, but we just went there and the bar was void of alcohol. The problems did not end there - the service was HORRID. I do not like to ding an establishment for service, but it was so bad I can't resist. The food was mediocre, but my potatoes were ice cold upon arrival so an hour after receiving them (no joke) I sent them back asking for a refund with the check. The worst part was the "manager" was milling around, I was complaining loudly and trying to flag him down to return my potatoes and he ignored us. Apparently there is more than one Goodfellows. I would avoid all of them.

We were in Mackinac for a month and eat here several times. Great staff, incredible pizza. I tried not to order it every time, but heaven help me it was incredible. The apps and salads are delicious as well.

Good location and atmosphere. The set up is confusing but they have a few different areas for dining including a small patio. Service was really good even though it took a little longer because they were so busy. We all ordered flatbread pizzas. The bread isn't very thin but still a good pizza. This item could easily be split between 2 people. Would go back.

Great great service. Inside the place has a funky smell because they use a deodorizer in the bar that does a weird job of masking the smoking. Probably a good idea to get that gone. We ate on the front porch. The view of main street was ok. The food was good. It was not exceptional, but serviceable. A bit pricey for what it was, but then again it's on Mackinac Island, where pricey seems to be a tradition. From skinning beavers and raccoons to skinning the tourists. This place is very well marketed. Nice logo. Nice picture menu. The chef needs to kick it up a notch, and the inside smell needs to go, and we'll talk another star or two.

Chophouse location. Writing this because my dinner straight up tanked. My food was really awful and overpriced, relative to a town with some pretty mediocre options I had the gnocchi ("homemade" with mushrooms spinach and onions), which tasted like it was made from instant mashed potatoes (they certainly didn't look like handmade gnocchi; either). It was doused in cream sauce that covered the absence of spinach and onions. It was pretty rich and Parmesan-dominant in flavor, so much so that I couldn't stomach much. In short, it was over $20 for mealy pre made gnocchi swimming in cheesy sauce. The accompanying bread was hard and cold; the salad I ordered to break up the carbs was swimming in dressing. It was overly decadent to a fault, to be blunt. SO had ribs, which were fine but nothing to write home about. Our friends enjoyed their pizza (which was reasonable in price). If I were to go again, I'd stick with the pizza or grill options. If you're interested in a chophouse, be wary of a menu that shares $12.99 sandwiches with $139 seafood specials.

Not the quality that you would expect for this area and at these prices. Tasted like chain restaurant food. Nothing special. Service was ok.

Way too expensive for the Applebee's food they serve. I went with my wife while we were on our honeymoon and the bartender was rude and short with us. I ordered the steak and they said it was the same cuts as the ones in Chicago. The T-bone was half fat and chewy. I don't recommend!

    (1)
  • Heather M.

Not impressed. Went here to have some Italian food. My husband got the cowboy steak and I got the eggplant Parmesan. For the price, it was not worth it. Too much money and the food was not as good as a local Olive Garden or Applebee's. Try other places on the island; there's other restaurants that aren't as expensive, have awesome views of the lake and really good food.

Excellent food!! Had our wedding dinner there and everyone loved their meals. Also had their amazing pizza. We went to go back to the island before winter just to go to Goodfellow's! The Lakeview hotel is also a very nice place to stay.

The wild mushroom gnocchi is amazing. They have a beers on tap, but could have a few more. We also had a flat bread that was very good.

We had just finished checking into our B&B and needed some dinner. The woman at our front desk suggested Goodfellows. Not realizing that there was the restaurant and then the wings and things area. We entered through what we later realized was the Wings N Things door. As we approached the door we were greeted by a woman who asked if we were coming in for dinner. Assuming that she was the hostess, we said yes. We walked in and she immediately offered the bar tables to us. When we asked if there was any differences between the restaurant and the bar area she said no. She walked away and then returned shortly thereafter and I realized she was our server. To most people this would not stand out, but having experience in the industry, I realized that she had purposely encouraged us to sit in that area because her section was empty and it would mean a tip in her pocket. I decided to let it go because I can understand the frustrations from the server perspective of having empty tables. The ambiance of the bar was not what we had been looking for. The music was too low and we could hear the conversations of everyone else in the space. The server disappointed me as she was not accommodating at all. It seemed as though we were inconveniencing her. The prices were WAY too expensive for a cheap bar experience. Given the food and the ambiance of the area, our check should have been roughly $40 (an eggplant sandwich, chicken piccata, a small appetizer and a glass of wine). It totaled at $65. Absolutely too much for what we got. I cannot speak to the restaurant as I did not experience it but save yourself some time and do not go to the Wings N Things section of Goodfellows.

We had a nice time here, and enjoyed our food but it was rather pricey even for Island fare. Our server was nice, and he treated us well. He was very knowledgeable on wines even though we did not order any. Our food we ordered was okay, I got a prosciutto and pea tortellini, and the portion size was huge. It was very tasty, and the loaded potato soup I got was very good as well. Hubby was less impressed with his sandwich (A Pizza Sub) and felt a little jipped for the price even though it was the cheapest thing on the menu. We could have bumped up and ordered the pricier fare, but didn't want to spend that much. All in all it was just okay. If we had ordered more expensive and a wine pairing I'm sure we would have been more impressed, but all in all, meh.

We came here twice over the course of our stay on Mackinac Island. Lunch: Decent place to come for lunch. Has something for everyone.... burgers, salads, sandwiches, soup, chicken fingers. All American type place. There is plenty of outdoor seating to watch the carriages stroll by. Late night: At this point, we came here around midnight and it was mostly just locals/people that worked on the island and came here after they were done work. I had their Goodfellow's Ale and it was delicious!

Unfortunately, I cannot rate this place well. A local recommended it and I'm giving it two stars because of the lovely patio area off of the main stip. First, it's pretty pricey for the food. ($20 dollars for a pasta dish) Food is mediocre, if that. I ordered their jerk chicken special with rice and beans. I specifically asked how the chicken was served and if was a half of a chicken. The waiter explained that it was chopped up chicken like you would receive on a salad. Nope, I was served random parts of a whole chicken. I just hate eating chicken this way and was extremely disappointed. The rice (and the four beans) with the rice was an odd flavor. It was also served room temperature. Some vegetables came with it, but defiantly were not fresh. We also ordered their club sandwich, which was just SOOOO plain. No toasting, not warm, no sauces, it was a poor excuse for a food you would receive at a restaurant. Pass on this one, and go look for some where else with a nice patio to eat at.

Ive had much better. My hubby and I split the whitefish and chips, and there was 90% batter and 10% fish. Our service was good. But the food...go elsewhere!

Food was great, although quite pricey. For the price I paid, I was surprised to see the salad dressing in a plastic container. The seafood risotto was delicious.

Go there for the pesto dip if nothing else! Soooo yummy on the rolls! Chicky chicky parm parm was not that great, pretty average tho large piece if it, noodles didn't have enough sauce so I put the pesto oil on the noodles and then it was fine. Chicken Marsala was better and flatbread pizza was pretty ok, esp the dough. Service wasn't that impressive with long waits in between.

Everything here was decent-- food, service, location-- but nothing spectacular. The food is pretty standard bar fare like sandwiches, burgers, wings. I had the pomegranate margarita (which was quite good) and also tried the whitefish BLT and was a bit disappointed. The fish was WAY too big for the sandwich and was smothered in melted cheese and half cooked bacon. I also had to ask for the aioli and pickle that were supposed to come along with it. The fries were good and most everyone at the table agreed that their food was good, but nothing memorable. They have an ideal location right on the main street across from all of the ferry ports, which is why I imagine they were so busy. This is a great place to come for a drink and maybe some apps, but if you're looking for really good food I would venture a little further out of that central strip to find something a little better.

My boyfriend and I went to the Goodfellow's Chop House for lunch. We are in our mid-twenties but look fairly younger. The restaurant was pretty much empty and the guy sitting us refused to sit us at a bigger table. He insisted they were for three people only, and we had to sit at the tiny tables for two people (despite the restaurant being nearly empty). We left because I did not want to eat at a restaurant with such rude people. On our way out, we noticed that two different couples, elderly, were seated at the bigger tables. We came back and informed the guy, Clint, that there were other people like us who were actually seated at the bigger tables. He said that there were 3 of them and one had left. We then asked "Both tables?". Clint finally seated us at a bigger table. It was ridiculous. While we ate, we noticed many older couples come in and be seated at the bigger tables promptly. I am not sure if we were treated rudely because we look young or because we are foreign. Whatever it was, this place is horrible with service. With the exception of our waiter, the staff there seemed horrible overall. The food was okay. My ribeye was tasteless. Extremely disappointed.

Surf n turf ($150) for two is 4 times what the surf and turf for one costs. other than that blunder food and service was excelent. Probably deserves more stars but when I asked about S&T for 2 the waitress said everything but the price. One order was $38 so instead of I and a buddy ordering it we just got the "for two" assuming it would be less than $76....Nope $150

On our first night on the island, we walked up and down Main St, looking for a bite to eat for our first meal on Mackinac. This place had been recommended to us by our hotel, and the restaurant has greeters on the street who are very pleasant. The atmosphere looked good to us from the sidewalk. We walked on though, and said we may come back (if we found nothing else). The coupon for 10% off sealed the deal, and we returned. The coupon should have been for 90% off, since the experience sucked almost immediately. Two entrances to the place serve to only confuse the hostesses. Tables are sat and ignored. We witnessed a family of five walk out after being ignored for 15 mins from seating. We were lucky. Our waiter seemed good but then misinformed us on how excellent the pasta line cook is. The Carbonara was atrocious. Wet, cold, diced ham was thrown on top of scrambled eggs in a cream sauce. I was hungry but ate none of it. However the smoked whitefish dip was very good as we're the rolls. We watched as waiters brought out full trays to empty tables!? We bailed at the first opportunity. We met a couple on our walk to witness the sunset, whom we had seen during dinner at Goodfellas, and we all agreed how bad this place is. My wife and I continued our stay by having excellent meals elsewhere (The Carriage House). At the end of our trip to Mackinac, we talked about the great week, and agreed this place was the only low point. What irked us was that it is evident that this place markets itself, appears from the exterior, and prices itself as a high end, good quality restaurant. Tourists are taken in by this. Unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth. We witnessed substandard plates brought to tables, confused waiters and overwhelmed staff in general. Avoid this place. It is a TRAP. However, folks who are unable to discern awful food from good quality food will have no problems.

I came here expecting a decent Italian dinner. The prices would make one assume that. While the service was quite good, it did not redeem the mediocre food. The bread was not very fresh and were just plain bland rolls. The "pesto" that came with it was completely overpowered with garlic. I did not know that Mackinac Island was vampire ridden. I was not too hungry, so I ordered the caprese salad. The mozzarella was not freshly made. You could easily by better quality cheese at the supermarket. This was the vacuum packed kind. At least it was not Polly-O... The tomatoes and basil were good, but filler lettuce was all over the plate. The portion was really small for $11. The fish was smothered in a butter sauce. On the side was steamed cauliflower and carrots that you'd even be disappointed to receive in your elementary school cafeteria. I was about to order a personal pizza, but then I was reminded that I had already tried their pizza and hated it. It turns out that the night before I had been to Goodfellows, but the bar area. I was super drunk, but could definately tell that it was horrific. The cheese was like plastic and the crust was worse than pizza you get at Costco. Good thing I avoided eating that garbage again.

This was awesome. I had Blackened Mahi sandwich and it was very spicy and delicious. We also tried the whitefish dip I would definetly have that again. I wish I was going to be on the island longer I'd like to try their dinner menu.

My family & I were looking for a place to eat on the island. The information booth suggested this place that tourists visit a lot. SERVICE: TJ was our waiter and was upfront about not being an experienced server. All in all he was pretty attentive to our needs. FOOD: Everyone ordered hamburgers which were ok: 2 thin pattys with a thin slice of cheese slapped on it. Not my kind of gourmet burger for the price we paid. Wine selection was plenty and very good. It's your typical American food fare with a little bit of everything that's - steaks, burgers, sandwiches, etc. ATMOSPHERE: It's a pretty large establishment that's attached to a hotel. The main bar area is separate from the dining area. And there's also dining outside. We went during the week of the Lilac festival and it was pretty dead in there.

Very good selection of steaks, seafood, and pastas. We started with calamari and spinach-artichoke dip. Calamari was very good. The spinach-artichoke dip itself was good, but the mini-pita chips served alongside were stale. This was easily remedied by use of the freshly baked dinner rolls - which also come with a house made basil pesto with a nice bite of raw garlic. For mains, my wife had the crab and lobster bisque pasta. The portion was huge - and not just because of a heap of starch underneath as many restaurants would be inclined to do. Nice big chunks of seafood in a creamy sauce spiked with sun-dried tomatoes. I went for the new york strip. The portion had to be around 16oz and the inside was the medium-rare I requested. The charring on the outside with a tad much, but nothing serious. Goodfellow's offers a selection of sauces for all of its steaks including a mushoom demi-glace, bleu cheese, cognac cream, etc. I selected the mushroom demi. It was good, but I should have gone with my instincts for a nice steak which would have been to just enjoy it without the sauce. Sides for the steak were a veg medley (asparagus, carrots, green beans) and a nice creamy mash. For our two year old, there was a nice selection of children's greatest hits. She went with grilled cheese and fries. The waitress helpfully offered to bring the kid's meal out with the apps. Service was excellent from the greeting at the door to tableside.

The food here is decent. I wouldn't say it's awesome, but we enjoyed what we had better than say, an Olive Garden. The waitor we had was horrible. He gave great service and checked often on the tables around us (seating 4-8 people) and practically ignored our wife and I. Apparently if he thinks you won't tip as much (because we're on vacation and wearing plain clothes) he doesn't think you deserve good service. At what point I asked for more water and he looked at my wife's glass and said "she still has some," suggesting I drink hers. I explained I didn't want lemon in mine, so he brought a pitcher and dropped it on the table so he wouldn't have to return for a refill. Absolutely horrible. I sure hope all the waiters aren't this way there, but this is my second experience with mediocre to poor service here on separate vacations. If you want some Italian food, this is the only place on the Island to go. But if you want better food AND good service, try a different place (Pink Pony was my favorite on the Island during our trip).

Arrived on a Tuesday for our 8:30 reservation, we asked to sit outside at a table over looking Main St., but since we were a 2 top, and the 2 tables I was looking at were 4 tops they said no can do. They sat us at a cramped 2 top right by busy door that staff used to service deck. I can understand if they were really busy to not let us sit at a 4 top, but it was later in the evening and they were not busy at all. That kind of ticked me off. After we ordered, a staff member asked if we wanted to move to one of the 4 tops, so that was nice. Since it was a chophouse I ordered a ribeye Med Rare. Steak came Medium at best. For $33 I asked waiter if they could cook me another! Waiter calls that same young man over that gave us the nicer table. "No problem sir, we will fix that" he said. Takes the plate and comes back a minute and a half later, puts the plate back in front of me and informs me that under better lighting it was in fact Med Rare. I was not going to make a scene, but I work in a restaurant and know what Med Rare is so I said thats fine in not a pleasant way and they did nothing. Waiter never came back til we were totally finished. Not good. So we went to The Carriage House at The Iroquois for an after dinner drink, because we had an awesome dinner experience there the night before...

OK. You're on THE ISLAND.... You want to eat at some eclectic, cool bistro. But, you have two little kids with you. This place is just FINE. Food was quite good actually. I had a Philly Cheese steak that was excellent. Wife had fish&chips, good she said. Kids had pizza. I had a taste of the pizza and it was much better than most "kids" pizzas. The waitstaff was excellent. Very nice considering the tourist deluge.

Ira from the Mackinac Island Bike Shop recommended this restaurant to us while we were renting our bikes. We decided to try it out for dinner our last night on the island. BIG MISTAKE. We had just completed a long ride around the island & were starving. It was a Saturday night & the other restaurants on Main St were packed with hungry tourists, we made our way to Goodfellow's. We were seated on the balcony immediately (table of 4 adults & a child). This should have been my first clue. They brought our warm ciabata bread & pesto (best part of the meal! It was a garlicky amazing goodness in a bowl!) as we waited on our Calamari app to arrive-which was nothing special, your normal deep fried calamari with boring marinara sauce. My husband & I both ordered the Chicken Marsala. The description on the menu mentioned nothing about breaded chicken, which is why we picked it over the chicken parm. However, it came to us in the form of a breaded chicken cutlet! It was the worst chicken marsala I've ever eaten. I couldn't even find the thin piece of chicken under all the breading! I ended up not even eating much of it. To make matters worse, my stepmom ordered the lobster/crab steak special they had that day. It came out with both the lobster tail & crab leg fused together *something I gather only happens when they are frozen, in the same bag together*. It made for some pretty nasty shellfish. She also asked for her steak cooked medium. It came out dry as a bone. I wish I had looked up the reviews on here before we ventured out to dinner. I would've loved to have gone back to Pink Pony than Goodfellows. What a waste.

Dining offerings are somewhat limited on the island. We tired of salads and sammies and opted to try this restaurant after overhearing someone recommend it. It's pretty decent food with good prices, for the island anyway. All entrees come with some bread rolls and a bowl of salad served family-style (a la Olive Garden, only better). My friends loved their solid standby spaghetti and meatballs, a menu item which was an unusual departure for them. I enjoyed my seafood fra diavolo. The wine list is fair. I wouldn't mind returning if it's still around in 10 years, which is when I'd return to Mackinac next...

Ate the king crab and lobster mac and cheese and was quite impressed. Have eaten quite a bit of different mac and cheese specials and this was one of the better ones. The size of the crab were as big as the penne, which i liked. Gave you plenty of crab and loster.

  • Patti R.

We stayed at the Lake View Hotel and ate dinner at Goodfellows since the hotel offered a discount for the restaurant. Decor was fine, good for families. I had the salmon with dill cream sauce, which was decent. My husband had the crab/lobster stuffed whitefish, and my two year old had the kid's mac & cheese. My husband said his whitefish was nearly inedible. He didn't care for the citrus sauce, and in addition to the stuffing tasting a bit fishy, it was not real crab or lobster. There were pieces of small shrimp in there! He notified the waiter but wasn't interested in a replacement. My daughter's mac & cheese, was literally Kraft Mac 'n Cheese, for $7. I know a lot of restaurants serve the boxed stuff, but come on, $7 for a bowl of it, when you can buy a whole box for 99 cents??? That really irked me. On the bright side, she ate it all up as if she's never eaten before! Bottom line - poor to mediocre food for a lot of money, as is most of the restaurants on the Island. At least we received a 15% discount for staying at the hotel.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
